E.J. Strickland


Miami native Enoch Jamal “E.J.” Strickland is a drummer, composer, educator, and artist who has performed on over 60 albums over the last decade. After studying jazz at The New School, Strickland built a career touring, performing, and recording with artists including Cassandra Wilson, Terence Blanchard, Lizz Wright, Wynton Marsalis, George Colligan, David Gilmore, Vincent Herring, and Nnenna Freelon, among others.

As an educator, Strickland has taught alongside Dave Douglas and Vijay Iyer at the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music, Steve Kirby at the University of Manitoba, and Earl MacDonald at the University of Connecticut. As a leader, he has released two albums: In This Day (2009) featuring Marcus Strickland, Jaleel Shaw, Luis Perdomo, and Hans Glawischnig, and The Undying Spirit (2015). In 2015, Strickland founded Transient Beings, an ensemble that celebrates our limited time on earth through a blend of funk, hip-hop, Afrobeat, and fusion.
