IMJS: Institute for Japanese Cultural Heritage Initiatives, in collaboration with the Miyagi Koto Ensemble, presents a special koto (Japanese zither) concert featuring works by Michio Miyagi (1894-1956) in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the institute’s Japanese Heritage Music Initiative. The ensemble is led by the current head of the Miyagi School of Koto, Yuriko Makise, and is joined by Hōzan Yamamoto (shakuhachi) and select members of the Columbia University Gagaku Ensemble.

  • Michio Miyagi Haru no Umi (The Sea in Spring) (koto and flute version) (1929)
  • Yutaka Makino Ryūkyū Min’yō ni yoru Kumikyoku (Suite on Ryūkyūan Folk Songs) (1966)
  • Classical Ono’e no Matsu (The Pine Tree on the Ridge) (the koto part composed by Michio Miyagi in 1920)
