Tyshawn Sorey

Composer and multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey has performed worldwide with his own ensembles and with John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano, Vijay Iyer, Jason Moran, Claire Chase, Roscoe Mitchell, Steve Lehman, and many others.

Sorey has composed for leading performers and ensembles such as International Contemporary Ensemble, Talea Ensemble, Julia Bullock, PRISM Quartet, JACK Quartet, TAK Ensemble, Brooklyn Rider, A Far Cry, Seth Parker Woods, Matt Haimovitz, Davóne Tines, Alarm Will Sound, Roomful of Teeth, and Lawrence Brownlee, among others. His music has been performed at the Library of Congress, Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and the Lucerne Festival. Recent projects include the premiere of Be Holding (2023) with Yarn/Wire and Cogitations, a Max Roach Centennial commission now touring with his trio and Sandbox Percussion.

Sorey is a recipient of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Music, a MacArthur Fellowship, and fellowships from United States Artists, Pew, Fromm, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is currently on the composition faculty at the University of Pennsylvania.
