New York-based vocalist Christopher Dylan Herbert performs opera, musical theatre, concerts, and recitals throughout the U.S., the Americas, Europe, and Asia. From 2010 to 2020, he sang with the vocal quartet New York Polyphony; two of the group's albums received Grammy nominations for Small Ensemble/Chamber Music, and a third was a Gramophone Award finalist. His 2020 solo album, Voices in the Wilderness, highlighted eighteenth-century female composers and was praised by NPR's Morning Edition.
Herbert is currently developing the role of Rodrigo with the Talea Ensemble in Suzanne Farrin's new opera Macabéa. Recent performances include the premiere of Judd Greenstein's A Marvelous Order, Vivier's Kopernikus in Bogotá and Buenos Aires, a debut at Seoul's Lotte Concert Hall, and WINTERIZE, his self-conceived outdoor reimagining of Schubert's Winterreise, staged in New York and Weimar. Other notable engagements have included Han Lash's Desire at Miller Theatre at Columbia University, Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti at Tanglewood, the title role in Handel's Saul at Trinity Wall Street, a Ginastera centennial with the International Contemporary Ensemble, Hannah Before in Laura Kaminsky's As One with American Opera Projects at BAM, and the title role in The War Reporter at The Prototype Festival and Stanford LIVE, among others.
In addition to serving on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music, Herbert is currently the Vocal Area Coordinator and an associate professor at William Paterson University. He holds degrees from Yale, Harvard, and Juilliard, and is a board member of The Plimpton Foundation.
