Billy Williams, Jr.

drums

Billy Williams, a native of Virginia Beach, began playing drums at the age of ten at the Brotherly Love Church of God in Christ in Norfolk, VA under the leadership of his grandfather, Pastor Wilbert R. Miller. His mother, the church Minister of Music, watched him closely and nurtured his gift. The foundation of building a life that was Christ-centered shaped Billy’s outlook on the power of music. The life-long lessons of music, humility, and professionalism learned during this time would also prove to be very vital to his career.
Now 25 and a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, Billy has had the opportunity to work professionally with master musicians, including Larry Willis, Cyrus Chestnut, Christian McBride, Donald Harrison, “rockjazz” pianist ELEW, Benny Golson, Gary Thomas, Rene Marie, Tim Warfield, Terell Stafford, Charles McPherson, Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, Eric Alexander, Jon Faddis, Tim Green, Warren Wolf, Orrin Evans, Stacy Dillard, and Allyn Johnson, among others. No stranger to the elite, Billy has been privileged to perform for some of the nation’s finest figures, including the Honorable General Colin Powell, Robert Redford, Alvin Ailey dance company artistic director Judith Jamison, former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, comedian Bill Cosby, and countless high-ranking political figures. His talents have afforded him the chance to perform around the world.
Billy can currently be seen touring with Larry Willis, Cyrus Chestnut, Warren Wolf, and pianist Justin Kauflin. In addition, he is the leader of his own ensemble. As a budding bandleader, Billy’s ensembles have appeared in concert at the Richmond Jazz Society’s Guest Educators Series; Jazz in the Park in Staunton, VA; Virginia Museum of Fine Art; the Stockley Gardens Arts Festival; The 2nd Street Festival; Bohemian Caverns (Washington, D.C.), and the Chrysler Museum of Art. Billy’s band has recently released its first EP entitled, Vibes Vol. 1.
