The 13th Annual Concert of Japanese Heritage Instrumental Music will this year also mark the 50th anniversary of Columbia’s sponsoring Institute, the IMJS: Japanese Cultural Heritage Initiatives. Featured will be world-renowned performers Mayumi Miyata (shō), Hitomi Nakamura (hichiriki), Takeshi Sasamoto (ryūteki), Yumi Kurosawa (bass koto), and Hidejiro Honjoh (shamisen), as well as star Columbia students Elena Ariza (cello) and Erik Helstrom (bass clarinet). The Columbia University Gagaku Instrumental Ensemble will play, as a yearly tradition, the classical work Etenraku and other classics, while prize-winning contemporary works will as usual expand horizons.
The concert is free and open to the public, but advance online registration is recommended at www.medievaljapanesestudies.org.
