Shtetl Stories: Remembering Jewish Lithuania

Monday, June 20, 2016, 7pm

Miller Theatre at Columbia University

This event has ended.

Seventy-five years ago on June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union and the Baltic states, murdering every Jew they could find. Within a year, they found well over a million, and almost wholly destroyed Jewish life in Eastern Europe.

Centropa, a Vienna-based Jewish historical institute, interviewed more than 1,200 elderly Jews in fifteen European countries. We never used video, and did not focus on the Holocaust. Instead, we asked the oldest living Jews in these countries to share thousands of their old family photos, and tell us their stories. Our goal: to preserve the memories of a world destroyed.

On June 20, 2016, Adam Kantor, Alexandra Silber, Alix Korey, and Adam Grupper - actors from Broadway’s FIDDLER ON THE ROOF - will read excerpts from Centropa's Lithuanian stories, adapted and directed by Ali Viterbi. You will enter the world of the shtetl, decade by decade, story by story.
