"The ingenious, curmudgeonly American composer Ralph Shapey, who died at 81 in 2002, wrote flinty works of uncompromising complexity. He expected listeners to bring their brains as well as their humanity to the concert hall, as he often said. 'I believe posterity will vindicate me,' Shapey explained in a 1996 interview with The New York Times, before chuckling and adding, 'So, that’s my problem'....”
